The minutes of the meetings of the Furman University Board of Trustees, held 1899. The Board assembled on June 12th, 1899. Langston, Earle, Fant, Ramsey, Buckkolz, Montgomery, and Wilkins were present. Dr. Riley presented a report of his year's work at the Female College and requested the next day's meeting be devoted to Furman University. It was resolved that the Presidents' reports would be presented at the beginning of all future meetings. A committee consisting of J.L. Tribble, C.K. Henderson, and H.C. Buckkolz was referred to President Montague's annual report. Brunson, Wilkins, and Shilor were appointed to a committe on deaths of members of the Board. C.S. Gardner's resignation as relcutantly accepted, althought it was advisable on account of his pastoral relations. Brother J.K. Durst's declination was also accepted. Former Treasurer H.J. Haynsworth was unanimously re-elected. The Board reassembled the next day. Lawton and Langston were both added to the committee on deaths. Suggestions of an Alumni Hall and new dormitory building were referred to committees. Honorary degrees of Doctor of Divinity were conferred upon Rev. A.C. Wilkins, pastor at Batesburg, and Rev. E.L. House, a congregational minister of mass. Vacancies on the board were filled by E.J. Kennedy, H.F. Cox, and J.H. Morgan. It was decided that teachers in the Greenville Female College would be nominated by the President and elected by the Board of Trustees. President Montague suggested that hereafter appointments to the faculty would be, at first, for one year only and thus appointed as 'instructor' or 'acting professor.' Appropriations for advertising and permits to erect an Alumni Hall were referred to the committee on professors' salaries. The Board reassembled on June 13th. The committee for professors' salaries reported which faculty members needed to be paid. The discontinuance of Professor Millichamp was advised. Professor Geer was elected professor of English. The board reassembled on June 13th. Treasurer H.J. Haynsworth submitted his auditors report and it was adopted. The committee report on professors' salaries was recommitted with instructions to report immediately, and Mosely was added to the list of members. A committee was raised to investigate the years' method of tuition payment.
